Soot, a black substance produced by incomplete combustion, can leave behind unsightly stains on surfaces, walls, and ceilings. Fortunately, it is possible to effectively clean up soot using basic household cleaners.
Before handling soot, it is essential to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Soot particles can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
Using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, gently suction away any loose soot particles. Avoid sweeping, as this can disperse the soot into the air.
In a bucket or bowl, mix warm water with white vinegar and a small amount of liquid dish soap. The vinegar acts as a degreaser, while the dish soap helps penetrate the soot stains.
Using a sponge or cloth, apply the cleaning solution to the soot-affected area. Allow the solution to sit for a few minutes to loosen the stains.
With a different sponge or cloth, gently scrub the soot stains. Avoid using abrasive materials, as they can damage the surface.
Use clean water to rinse the area thoroughly. Repeat steps 4-6 if necessary.
If baking soda was used, apply a solution of warm water and vinegar to remove any residual baking soda. Rinse again with clean water.
Once the soot stains have been removed, dry the area with a clean cloth or towel to prevent further staining.
